The rules
Everyone starts off the board. On your turn you roll one die and move that many squares along the numbered track, which runs left to right along the bottom row, then right to left along the next, and so on up to 100. Land at the foot of a ladder and you climb to its top. Land on a snake's head and you slide down to its tail. You must reach 100 exactly — if your roll would take you past it you do not move at all and your turn passes. First one home wins.
A game decided by dice deserves dice you can check
Snakes and Ladders has no decisions in it. You never choose anything; once the dice are fixed, the entire game is already determined. That makes it the one game where "were the dice honest" is not a side question — it is the only question. And every site in this category asks you to take it on faith.
Ours does not. Before your first roll we publish a SHA-256 hash of the server seed. Every roll comes from that seed combined with your client seed and the roll number, so the whole sequence was decided before you touched anything. When the game ends we show you the seed itself. Hash it and check it matches what we published, then recompute the rolls and confirm they are the ones you got. If a single roll had been changed to suit us, the hash would not match. The same property is what stops us gaming you psychologically. We highlight when you land just short of a ladder, because those near misses genuinely happen and they are the most infuriating part of the game — but we could not manufacture one even if we wanted to, because the roll was fixed before we knew it.
How long a game takes, exactly
About 46 rolls for a single player to get home on our board. That figure is not measured by playing a lot of games and averaging — Snakes and Ladders is an absorbing Markov chain, so the expected number of turns can be solved. We do both: the exact solve and a 120,000-game simulation are compared on every build and have to agree. The classic Milton Bradley board comes out at 39.2 by the same method, which matches the published figure and is how we know the solver is right.
Play it the way it is actually played
Two to four players passing one device around is the default here, not an afterthought behind an online lobby. This is a game for a kitchen table or a wet afternoon in a classroom, and a matchmaking queue is not what it needs.
