Manni

Three players, twelve tricks, a new contract each round.

How to play Manni

This is the three-player Hornafjardar version of Manni. Everyone receives 12 cards; the remaining 16 form the exchange pile. The cut chooses the contract: 2–5 means nullo, 6–9 makes that card’s suit trump, and 10–ace means no trump.

Before play, select cards to discard and confirm an exchange. The player after the dealer may exchange up to seven, the next player up to five, and the dealer up to however many remain. Exchanging zero is allowed. Cards come from the top of the pile; discarded cards leave the hand.

Follow the suit led whenever possible. Otherwise play any card. The highest trump wins, or the highest card of the led suit if no trump was played. Aces are high except in nullo, where they are low. The trick winner leads next.

In trump and no-trump, earn a plus tally for every trick above four, or a minus tally for every trick below four. Nullo reverses this: fewer tricks is better. Plus and minus tallies remain separate. As soon as someone reaches ten plus tallies, subtract each player’s minus tallies and compare totals. Highest net total wins; tied leaders share the win.

Can the dealer exchange more than four cards?

Yes. The dealer may exchange as many cards as remain in the Manni, up to the size of their hand.
